Markus Hartel Sir Raghaus

Markus Hartel was born in a small industrial town in western Germany. His love for mechanics matched his creative itch when he first walked into an old school letterpress print shop in 1987, where he asked for a typesetting apprenticeship, and so began his life-long professional journey of creative work, photography and print making.

“I’ll never forget the smell of ink, machine oil, paper, mildew, and cigarette smoke in one place.”

Times were changing rapidly and digital desktop publishing technology reshaped the craft of graphic design and printing forever. Markus quickly found a way to capitalize on this new wave of technology – he soon opened his own commercial prepress and digital print shop in 1994.
After over a decade in an incredibly fast paced environment, he grew restless and he eventually closed shop. Markus moved to New York City in 2003 where he worked to become one of the better known modern street photographers, while still working in the graphic design and prepress trade. Eventually, after 13 years, the city was too chaotic for the life he wanted to pursue and he stumbled across the City of Newburgh during a weekend vacation. One visit to Newburgh mesmerized him and the perfect pair of vintage German Heidelberg letterpress machines miraculously found their way to him, and his love for traditional print making became fresh again. He had the idea of opening a hybrid letterpress and specialty print shop and set up his studio on Broadway in Newburgh and has been in love with the small city ever since.

“Markus, you do beautiful work. I love your attention to detail and your high standards. It’s so absolutely refreshing.”

Why Raghaus?
Rag is an informal term used in typesetting, typography and layout to describe an uneven margin for a vertical column of type. It can apply to either print or digital text, according to the visual organization of the text. Rag is also known as ragged text.

good rag is one where the lines move in and out in small increments. A not-so-good rag bounces the eye back and forth from line to line creating distracting white spaces in the margin.
